About the Item
Prehistoric Casas Grandes Villa Ahumada polychrome horned toad pottery jar. Medio Period, Diablo Phase, circa 1180 to 1360 CE. A captivating creature of earth and clay, this ceramic jar takes the form of a horned toad - revered across the American Southwest as a powerful symbol of protection and earth magic. Sculpted with alert eyes, raised horns and a squat, spiny body, the vessel's shape evokes the armored confidence of its namesake. Bold red, white and black geometric designs sweep across the sharply angled shoulder curving around the central spout and highlighted by a continuous border of impressed grooves, imitating the ridged texture of reptilian skin. Carefully modeled and vividly painted, this jar captures both the symbolic potency and whimsical artistry that defines Casas Grandes pottery at its zenith. Ex. Berry Collection. 7 1/2"W x 3 3/4"H
