About the Item
This extraordinary antique Sioux beaded hide dress, dating circa 1880, is a rare and authentic example of Plains Indian textile artistry. Handcrafted from native-tanned deer hide, the dress is adorned with vibrant Venetian glass trade beads, exemplifying the skill, tradition, and cultural heritage of the Sioux Nation.
The garment features a striking turquoise-blue beaded yoke highlighted with intricate meandering motifs in white-heart red, yellow, and dark blue beads. A dynamic stepped geometric pattern in green, white-heart red, dark blue, and yellow beads wraps elegantly from front to back, creating rhythm and visual depth. Flowing fringe along the arms and hem adds movement and emphasizes the traditional aesthetic, while a red trade cloth band encircles the neckline, providing striking contrast and cultural significance.
Constructed with sinew and thread, the supple hide reflects time-honored materials and techniques passed down through generations. Originating from the Sioux people of the Great Plains—including South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana—this dress embodies ceremonial artistry and masterful beadwork.
Accompanied by a custom-made armature for display, this museum-quality Sioux dress is an exceptional acquisition for collectors of Native American regalia, Plains Indian artifacts, and 19th-century Indigenous textiles.
