About the Item

Fine Pair of Iroquois Beaded Moccasins North-eastern Woodlands, likely Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy) Late 19th to early 20th century A delicate and elegant pair of women’s moccasins from the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) peoples, crafted with exceptional artistry and attention to detail. These soft-soled moccasins are made from fine tanned hide and decorated with classic Iroquois raised beadwork, featuring vibrant floral designs on a silk or cotton ground. The vamps are adorned with intricate glass seed beads in a palette of clear, white, red, green, and blue—meticulously applied in bold floral motifs and framed by double rows of white bead edging. The sides are decorated with white bead vines stitched onto dark velvet cloth, edged in green and red trade cloth, with matching red ribbon ties at the ankle. Materials: Hide, glass beads, velvet, wool or cotton trade cloth, silk ribbon Dimensions: Approx. 24 cm (9½ in) in length Condition: Excellent; minor bead loss and slight wear at soles consistent with age. Bright and vibrant colours well preserved. These moccasins represent the rich visual language and craftsmanship of Iroquois beadwork, prized for its three-dimensional “raised” technique and naturalistic floral forms. Likely created as formal or gift items, rather than for daily wear.
