About the Item
A finely woven baleen basket by John Hank of Barrow, Alaska, one of the recognized makers of this rare Native Alaskan art form. The basket features tightly coiled and woven whale baleen with walrus ivory details, including a hand-carved polar bear finial adorning the domed lid. The ivory base reinforces the structure, while the intricate weave showcases a subtle rhythm of alternating light and dark strands.
Materials: Whale baleen, walrus tusk ivory
Maker: John Hank (Barrow, Alaska)
Baleen basketry emerged in the early 20th century as a unique expression of Native Alaskan artistry, combining survival materials with cultural symbolism. Baleen, valued for its flexibility and strength, was traditionally gathered during whale hunts, while ivory finials provided ornament and identity. Works by John Hank and other Barrow basket makers are represented in major museum collections, including the Smithsonian Institution, and are highly sought by collectors.
This example retains its original explanatory paperwork describing the use of baleen and walrus ivory, further enhancing its provenance and desirability.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition with natural variations consistent with age and organic materials. Includes original paperwork and documentation.
Provenance
Collectability: Authentic baleen baskets with named makers and original paperwork are increasingly rare on the market. John Hank’s works are recognized by institutions and private collectors alike, making this piece an exceptional opportunity for acquisition.
