About the Item

Pair of Papago basketry dolls. Male and female, both with hats (one not photographed). With original sales tag “Arizona. Made by Sally Lopez at Santa Rosa Valley.” Ex. Dunning. Papago baskets are handcrafted of beargrass, yucca cactus (white or green) and Devil’s Claw (black). The technique used is known as coiling. Split stitch baskets are made of beargrass and sewn with yucca in such a manner that the coil is exposed to form part of the pattern.
