About the Item
This impressive antique ship’s wheel is a wonderful piece of 19th-century maritime history, stamped “1864 US” on the iron hub. Crafted from solid mahogany with an eight-spoke configuration, the wheel has the classic proportions and weight of a working naval or merchant vessel wheel from the mid-1800s. The iron banding and central boss retain their original rivets, adding authenticity and a powerful sense of age and service.
The rich mahogany has developed a deep, warm patina over more than 150 years, with areas of surface wear that speak to decades at sea. The spokes show wonderful shaping and turning detail, and the remnants of old red paint on the iron ring suggest naval use or later shipyard repainting—both compelling historical notes. Whether displayed on a wall, mounted on a stand, or incorporated into a maritime-themed interior, it makes a commanding decorative statement.
The wheel is in nice antique condition, showing expected wear, losses, surface scratches, and age patina consistent with its era and original use at sea. An exceptionally evocative 19th-century maritime artifact—perfect for coastal homes, collectors of naval memorabilia, or anyone drawn to authentic nautical décor. 42h x 42w x 3d
