About the Item

Early 20th century wooden cleat or castanet in the shape of pi used to stop a line, from a fishing boat in northern France. Generally secured by strong through-bolting screws on a strong part of the deck hull. Good condition. Measurements 33.5x3.5x4.2 cm - inches 13.3x1.4x1.7 Cleat is the nautical term for a fixed device to stop a line or rope or cable. The more traditional model consists of a flat surface in contact with the boat from which vertically protrude one or more shorter rods, from which, parallel to the base plate, are attached two pointed or flared ends that serve to keep the cable from spilling out. The last photo is the gift box.
