About the Item
Rare cast brass "Jack Tar" umbrella and sailor's staff holder, English manufacture datable to around the late from the 19th century.
The umbrella stand is depicted by a sailor Jack Tar wearing a wide-brimmed hat, standing over combat paraphernalia consisting of anchor with chain, shovel, powder barrel, and various lines.
The sailor holds a rope in his hands coiled to form the top support for umbrella and stick, at the bottom a removable tray to collect the drops.
Measures 25.6x16.5x60.5 cm - inches 10.1x6.5x23.8.
Jack Tar was the commonly used English expression and referred to to sailors in the merchant navy and Royal Navy in the era when the British Empire was at its peak.
Jack was a frequently used generic term to distinguish men who went to sea.
While the suffix Tar was used beginning in the 1600s and appears to derive from the name of the tar-coated cloth used to make the garment for the purpose of make it waterproof.
