The propeller gradually took the place of wheel propulsion beginning in the mid-19th century: one of the first experiments occurred in 1827 when Czech engineer Josef Ressel tested this new type of propulsion in the port of Trieste.
This early experiment was followed by others, such as that of John Ericsson who, in 1839, enabled a ship to cross the Atlantic in forty days. In 1849, a tug-of-war competition was even held between two ships of the same power, one with wheel propulsion and one with propeller propulsion, which ended with the victory of the second one; the propeller became the most widely used propulsion solution in the navy by the late 1800s.
In the case of the use of propellers in marine applications, a special study of the liquid environment in which they will be used is still needed. Propellers used in this field, except in the case of submarines, are always placed in the aft area for safety reasons.
