About the Item

Military painting, circa 1866 We are proud to offer a wonderful example of a mid-19th century German gouache folk art military painting. This example pays homage to watch maker named JM Bertrand. Depicting several subject matters including 3 soldiers, one with his hat on the floor, one seated on a horse stamped 96 and one standing with his hat in hand. The interesting thing about all these figures is that the faces are all black one photos of a male face (who we believe to be Mr Bertrand). With a dove flying above holding a souvenir wreathe, with another dove carrying an olive branch. The reverse of this paining is mounted on an old calendar which is still firmly intact attached. A wonderful piece of folk-art militaria art, completely untouched in form still in its original maple frame. Size in inches: H 16.5” x W 21.5” x D 0.75” Origin: Germany Condition: This painting is over 100 years old, still in complete original condition. There is wear and tear present in the form of faded surface and paint, discolouring in sections especially to the top right-hand corner.
