About the Item
A wonderful, unique, and very engaging original indigenous Australian Aboriginal painting featuring two Mimi spirit figures. The painting is made with natural earth pigments which are hand painted on natural eucalyptus wood bark. This work is by Aboriginal Australian artist Sambo Ashley Mindiliwuy (c. 1927–1988) who is from the Rembarraga language group. His work is held in such esteemed collections as the National Gallery of Australia.
Mimi spirits are tall, slender, and ancient fairy-like supernatural beings from the folklore of Indigenous Australians in northern Australia, particularly Arnhem Land. They are depicted as being so thin that a strong wind could blow them away, so they live in rock crevices and emerge at night to hunt, fish, and hold ceremonies. According to legend, Mimi spirits taught Aboriginal people valuable skills like hunting, cooking, and painting, and they are often featured in rock art.
A striking and original work. Would be a great addition to any Australian Aboriginal or tribal art/artifacts collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting.
