About the Item

A wonderful, unique, very engaging original indigenous Australian Aboriginal dreaming painting by famed Oenpelli Western Arnhem Land artist Bardayal "Lofty" Nadjamerrek AO (c. 1926–2009) who was a Kunwinjku Aboriginal artist of the Mok clan. He belonged to the Duwa moiety and spoke the Kundedjnjenghmi language. Nadjamerrek was a prominent figure in contemporary Indigenous Australian art and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2004 Australia Day Honours for "service to the preservation of Indigenous culture as a Senior Traditional man and significant artist whose work documents the relationship of the land and its ancestral past via the Mimih Spirits of rock art" This work features a Wakkewakken, a legless spirit figure from Australian Aboriginal mythology, particularly associated with the Mok and Warddeken peoples of Arnhem Land, often depicted as a human-like form of the crow with a skeletal head and connected to the Sugarbag (Native Honey) Dreaming. It plays a significant role in the Sugarbag cycle and can bring rain or cause other forms of disruption. The spirit is sometimes described as living in water, where its honey is said to still be present. This particular work has been painted in the artist's "X-Ray style" which reveals the subjects skeleton and internal organs contained with. Lofty was famed for this. The painting is made with natural earth ochre pigments which are hand painted on natural organic flattened stringybark wood panels taken usually from eucalyptus trees. Gallery certicate of authenticity (COA) and artist's information attached in a pocket on verso as well as a photo of him with this work. Nadjamerrek's work can be found in numerous prominent collections and museums including: Artbank, Sydney Australian Museum, Sydney Aboriginal Arts Board of the Australia Council, held by the National Museum of Australia in Canberra Berndt Museum of Anthropology, University of Western Australia Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, University of Virginia Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin Museum of Contemporary Art, Arnotts Collection, Sydney National Gallery of Australia, Canberra National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne The Holmes a Court Collection, Perth University of Queensland A striking, original work. Would be a great addition to any Australian Aboriginal or tribal art/artifacts collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent artwork in about any setting.
