About the Item

An impressive and intricately detailed Italian 18th century Renaissance st. Oil on Canvas and Mecca painting of the Road to Calvary, in the manner of Giovanni Paolo Panini. This dramatic capriccio style painting is set within a wonderful and richly patinated Mecca frame displaying mottled and beaded bands surrounding the painting. The deeply toned painting showcases a devotional scene from The Road to Calvary, with the figure of Christ baring his cross while lead by a Roman soldier on horseback. Christ is shown in a red and blue garment while surrounded by classical figures and walking with his cross towards a monumental arch and domed structure in the distance. Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691-1765) was an Italian painter and architect known for his detailed and grandiose depictions of Roman ruins and cityscapes. Born in Piacenza, Panini moved to Rome around 1711, where he studied under the tutelage of the perspective painter Benedetto Luti.
