“Nelson’s First Lesson” Silhouette, 19th Century A charming 19th-century silhouette titled “Nelson’s First Lesson.” The scene depicts a young boy receiving instruction from a sailor, with a ship model and dog completing the composition. Nautical details such as the hanging nets and ship in the background enrich the maritime theme and pay tribute to Britain’s naval heritage. Beautifully executed in india ink against a warm-toned background, the work retains its original verre églomisé mount and is presented in a period bird’s-eye maple frame with gilt slip. An evocative piece of early folk art capturing both the romance and discipline of naval life — a fine example of maritime-themed silhouettes from the Victorian or Regency period.
