About the Item

A fine American cotton patchwork quilt with thin batting executed in the Log Cabin primary and Barn Raising secondary pattern circa late 19th to early 20th century. Collected in Lancaster County, PA, this quilt was likely made by Mennonite people at the turn of the 20th century. The variation of Log Cabin pattern was formed by using small squares of the same size. The placement of the bright red squares diagonally formed a striking concentric diamond pattern that appears rising above the surface visually. This is known as Barn Raising pattern. The color choice was quite striking with shade of muted grey, beige and turquoise blue in the background contrasting the bright red. The border consists of purple and red bands and were highlighted with scrolling pierced stitches. The backing of the quilt was made from large patches of cotton tartans of different colors. The Boro-effect renders the piece an even more rustic and folky charm. A wonderful piece of Americana textile and well preserved.
