About the Item

Rare Antique Norwegian 'Ølfugl' Type Ale Bowl Tine Box, Dated 1890 An exceptionally rare and museum-quality example of Norwegian Primitive folk art, this 'Ølfugl' (ale bird) type / kjenge form tine box dates to 1890 (carved under "90"), as evidenced by the original carved markings. Inspired by 18th-century traditions, it is a masterful piece of vernacular craftsmanship, handcrafted from bent pinewood. The box is distinguished by its iconic carved bird head handle, a feature prized in Scandinavian ale vessels. It showcases exquisite, hand-painted rosemaling on an antique white ground, with vibrant floral motifs in classic farmhouse colors, complemented by a rich farmhouse blue-painted interior. This piece is further personalized with the carved initials "A.O.D.M." under, offering a poignant connection to its original owner. It remains in very good original condition with minor, stable age-related wear and historic repairs, all contributing to its authentic character. A significant collector's item, this ølfugl box serves as a stunning sculptural object or a unique storage piece for discerning collectors of Scandinavian antiques.
