About the Item

20th Century African Hand Carved Wood Hair Comb of a Hand Holding Bird A well-composed figurative hair comb with a traditional silhouette, with an incised design incorporating repeating geometric forms, avian and reptile imagery. The bird held by a hand depicts the Ashanti proverb "One bird in your hand is better than ten birds in the sky." The valuation differs considerably from the Western version. Western influences are evident in the heart and cross design elements. The snake and bird motif represents many proverbs promoting the virtues of patience, along the lines of "patience can result in big rewards". In Ashanti culture, both sexes wear combs. Women receive combs as gifts to mark important events and milestones. Height on custom display stand: 11.5 in./ 29 cm
