An amazing Early 20th century European Tramp art castle model Quite simply this is one of the most unusual pieces of sculpture tramp art that we have uncovered in a long time, built using a technique called chip or notch carving on pine sectioned wood, this huge model of a castle or tower stands over 30 inches tall. With a toleware set of metal flags, one in Austrian colours and the other in Italian “Lombardy” colours. All hand carved in the typical naïve yet intricate folk art. With two open section turrets and central toleware balcony. The open window have been converted so that small objects can be placed inside for display purposes (we have used small German soldiers to illustrate this feature, The figures are not part of this sale). The share scale of this object is outstanding, and most certainly a piece of sculptural art in our humble opinion. Tramp art is a style of wood working which emerged in America in the latter half of the 19th century. Some of tramp art's defining characteristics include chip or notch carving, the reclamation of cheap or available wood such as that from cigar boxes and shipping crates, the use of simple tools such as pen knife, and the layering of materials into geometric shapes through glue or nails. One technique used in tramp art is crown of thorn joinery. Size in inches: H 31” x W 30” x D 9” Period: Early 20th Century Material: Wood Origin: EU Condition: Aged Condition Report 1. The item shows a deep natural patination due to its age. 2. Crackled surface paint due to its age 3. Some missing sections and breaks to the wood (nothing structural) 4. The shelf section to the reverse has been updated later. Completely solid in structure and form, a deep natural patina across the items due to age, an artifact that is old, so expect this to reflect in its condition.
