A wonderful vintage American folk art hand carved and painted figural peacock tree by decoy carver Ken Kirby (New Jersey, United States). Featuring three uniquely modeled exotic peacock bird figures in beautiful intricately detailed polychrome paint perched in naturalistic twig tree, rising on sturdy ebonized turned pineapple-form finial base. Signed, Ken Kirby burn-blindstamped and hand written to verso. Highly decorative, rare, whimsy and uniquely distinctive, this charming work makes for a wonderful console statue, shelf, mantle accent, table centerpiece, or folky artwork, sure to add graceful whimsical elegance, cozy romantic sophistication, rustic warmth, natural interest, character and charm to any space! Dimensions: (approx) 23.5" Tall, 17" Wide, 10" Deep Base: 5.25" Diameter About the Maker/Artist/Creator: Ken Kirby (shown in 18th photo) While on a vacation to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1983, Ken visited a decoy shop and was fascinated by the wildfowl carvings on display. He purchased a rough blank for a decoy to try his hand at carving and painting. He was already an experienced woodworker who had made most of the furniture in his home. With this first decoy, his carving career began. He began selling his birds in decoy shops on the Outer Banks and then expanded to shops in Maryland and New Jersey, later in Maine. Ken Kirby Decoy Classics was born. In his early years, he discovered a special fascination with old classic decoys made by famous carvers. He has won many ribbons for his duck and shorebird carvings at competitions. He has also served as a judge at the Ocean County Decoy show held in Tuckerton, NJ. He was awarded “Carver of the Year” in 2014 by the NJ Decoy Collector’s and Carvers Club. Although he does all kinds of birds, typically coastal shorebirds, song birds, duck and geese, custom ordered owls, woodpeckers, and others, recently he has occasionally made miniature birds and bird trees. After 40 years of experience, Ken still enjoys visualizing a bird in a block of wood and bringing it to life. Condition: Great original vintage condition.
