Antique Swedish Mangle Board Love Token with Carvings from 1785. Made in Sweden.
Swedish folk art board with a carved handle for mangling, dated 1785.
These wooden boards were used to smoothe and press linen before the invention of modern irons. Damp linen was wrapped around a roller and then the board was rocked back and forth over it to press out wrinkles. The handle is often carved in the shape of a horse.
In Scandinavia these mangle boards were a typical gift made or commissioned by a young man for his wife to be. Typically carved with the their initials and date or year of engagement.
This particular board features a large carved plant with flowers in a vase/urn. Also the initials "MLD" and "1785".
Richly decorated with various colours. The carved handle has wonderful wear and patina.
Good original condition with lovely patina. Small older holes from bores.
