About the Item
A rare mid-century carousel sculpture attributed to Bernard Kindt, master Belgian sculptor. Hand-carved in wood and finished in original polychrome paint, this expressive piglet exemplifies European fairground art at the intersection of folk sculpture and collectible design.
This sculptural carousel figure, titled Three Piglets, is attributed to Bernard Kindt (born Herseaux, Belgium, 1934) and dates from circa 1960. Kindt was a master sculptor renowned for his hand-carved wooden figures created for European carousels and fairgrounds. From 1955 onward, he collaborated closely with Atelier L’Autopède in Belgium, a leading manufacturer of metal fairground structures, supplying sculptural wooden figures that combined craftsmanship, movement, and popular imagery.
Kindt’s work extended beyond traditional carousel horses to a wide range of animals and cultural figures, including pigs, elephants, cows, frogs, and well-known film characters such as Bambi, Popeye, and Olive Oyl. His sculptures are instantly recognizable for their bold forms, expressive features, and vibrant polychrome surfaces rooted in folk-art traditions.
This piglet is carved in solid wood and retains its original hand-applied polychrome paint. The lively pose, exaggerated facial expression, and graphic coloration give the piece a strong sculptural presence, allowing it to function today as a standalone art object rather than a purely decorative artifact. Mounted on a metal display stand, it is well suited for presentation in both private and commercial interiors.
The surface shows visible wear, paint losses, and patina consistent with age and use. These traces are considered part of the sculpture’s authenticity and historical integrity, contributing to its character and narrative rather than detracting from it. The piece has not been over-restored.
Today, Bernard Kindt’s carousel sculptures are collected worldwide and appreciated as rare examples of mid-century European folk-modern art, occupying a space between design object, sculpture, and cultural artifact.
