About the Item
Exceptional Mandalay-Period Gilded Burmese Repoussé Offering Bowl
Height: 5.5 in
Diameter: 9 in
Material: Heavy gilt brass
Origin: Burma (Myanmar), late 19th–early 20th century
This outstanding Burmese offering bowl represents the finest traditions of Mandalay-period metalwork, distinguished by its deep, sculptural repoussé scenes, opulent gilded surface, and exceptionally crisp detailing. Crafted with both ritual and aesthetic intent, bowls of this calibre were traditionally used in monasteries and elite households for alms presentation, merit-making ceremonies, and royal offerings.
The exterior displays a fully developed narrative band of celestial beings and court figures, each modeled in high relief and framed within elaborate arched temple niches. The figures wear traditional Burmese royal attire tiered crowns, layered robes, and stylized jewelry hallmarks of late Konbaung-era iconography. The repoussé work is remarkably sharp, with strong definition in facial features, drapery folds, and architectural frames, demonstrating the hand of a highly skilled Mandalay craftsman.
Above the figural register runs an ornate band of scrolling lotus foliage, symbolizing purity and spiritual elevation, while the lower frieze features dense floral motifs associated with Burmese auspicious symbolism. The interior is equally decorated, a luxury found only in premium-quality examples where the artisan intended the vessel to impress from every angle.
The bowl retains a rich, even layer of gilding with a warm, deep tone characteristic of older Burmese pieces. Its weight, workmanship, and iconographic clarity place it firmly in the upper tier of collectible Burmese repoussé vessels.
