About the Item
A soulful and expressive double cherub carving, hand-carved in Mexico circa late 18th to early 19th century. This remarkable wall sculpture features two cherubic faces framed by flowing curls and sweeping wings, carved from a single block of wood and retaining traces of its original dark polychrome and gilt finish.
The faces are inset with glass eyes, lending an evocative and almost lifelike presence typical of early religious folk art. The reverse shows deep hand-hollowing and tool marks, evidence of traditional craftsmanship.
Pieces such as this were often created for small rural chapels or devotional home altars, reflecting the deep spiritual and artistic traditions of colonial Mexico. Its timeworn surface and patina speak to centuries of use and reverence.
