About the Item

A beautifully hand-carved vintage kuksa, the traditional wooden drinking cup rooted in Sámi culture from the northern regions of Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Typically carved from birch burl and used for drinking around the fire, kuksas like this one were part of both daily life and folk tradition. The kuksa is a time-honoured object in Sámi tradition — practical, personal, and meant to last a lifetime. Often passed down through generations, these wooden cups carry cultural significance and a deeply human connection to nature, craft, and daily rituals. What makes this piece exceptional is the elongated, sculptural handle — shaped like a stylized bird — which adds a strong decorative quality to the otherwise functional form. It feels animal-like and expressive, with a soft matte patina that speaks of age and quiet use. Likely made during the Nordic post-war folk revival of the 1950's–60's, this could be a studio craft piece inspired by traditional shapes. Highly unusual and hard to find — a small folk art object that also reads as design. • Length 26 cm, height 10 cm • Hand-carved wood, likely birch • Mid-20th century • Nordic origin • Beautiful vintage condition – signs of age and use consistent with material and function
