About the Item

Late 20th Century Norwegian Rosemaling Ale Bowl (Kjenge) by U.M. Lien, 1999 A superb example of contemporary Norwegian folk art, this hand-painted ale bowl (Kjenge) is dated 1999 and executed by the artist U.M. Lien. Deeply inspired by 18th and 19th-century Scandinavian forms and techniques, the piece stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of traditional rosemaling. Carved from a solid piece of wood, likely pine or birch, the bowl features a classic form elevated by its exceptional painted decoration. The surface is adorned with authentic rosemaling in a classic palette of farmhouse red and deep blue, featuring intricate, swirling floral motifs. The artist's confident brushwork and mastery of the style are evident throughout. The most striking sculptural element is the elegantly carved double-horse handle, a celebrated and historic feature of Norwegian ale bowls that symbolizes strength and hospitality. The interior is signed and dated "U.M. LIEN 1999" and bears a charming poetic inscription in Norwegian: "Drikk min venn og giv deg stunder, pust i mellom jeg deg det unner," which translates to "Drink my friend and give yourself moments, breathe in between I grant you that." Dimensions: --Length: 36 cm (14.2 in) --Width: 26.5 cm (10.4 in) --Height: 19 cm (7.5 in) This Kjenge is in excellent original condition, with only the most minor traces of age, consistent with its careful preservation. It remains a vibrant and structurally sound piece.
