About the Item
This unique work of folk art is a spirited profession of solidarity and resistance. Hand-carved from a solid piece of wood revealing the bust of a man. His right arm is raised, bearing a clenched fist. His earnest expression is a striking focal point, passionate in contrast to the subtle inflections of his body. With his mouth partially open, this carving leaves us with the impression that he is heartily announcing something, building onto the significance of his raised fist. The artist makes careful use of detail, with subtle texturing to his hair and remarkable attention paid to the form of his face, ears, and fist. Paint is sparingly applied to emphasize features like the eyes, facial hair, and mouth area. A wash of deep brown wood stain allows the choice of medium to shine while still suggesting deliberation in the meaning of the color. A powerful and impactful work of folk art. Carved signature at base reads 'Nathan Jacobs, 1977'. Some past repairs to raised arm as shown in photos.
