About the Item
Called a ¨Taca-taca" in Spanish, this handmade combination baby seat and walker from the early part of the 20th century is a fine example of rustic ingenuity and craftsmanship. Much like the upper part of a highchair, the baby would be safely seated inside, providing a certain degree of independence. With older children, they might push with their legs and scoot along the floor (some taca-tacas were fit with rollers or wheels, this one has simple wooden runners). It is very well constructed out of hardwood, using mortise and tenon joints, and decorated with carved six-pointed stars. All surfaces are well worn and rounded off due to age and use, making this once practical object a beautiful one-of-a-kind folk art sculpture. It can be adapted to any number of new purposes - a base for a planter, vase or lamp, a magazine stand or small shelf, or simply displayed as is, paying homage to traditional Spanish village life of decades passed.
