About the Item

This is a very fine example of a late 19th century Briar wood walking stick from an Edinburgh workshop in Scotland . More used as an object of status than a walking stick but exceptional carving and quality of wood. Carved for a ' Mr J Thomson' with his name engraved in a siver collar around the neck of the walking stick. The iconography on the knarled briar wood represents an 'Adder' which is the only poisonous snake native to the British Isles. The Adder is slowly winding up and around the piece warning anyone 'not to touch'. The Thistle handle has been added in the early 20th century adding a gentle Scottish touch to the piece.
