About the Item
This exquisite bronze sculpture by German sculptor Werner Meurer (1911-1986) presents a standing girl, cast in a strictly limited edition from one of the artist’s few authorised runs. Meurer studied at the Werkschule Dortmund and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and later served for two decades at the Cologne Cathedral workshop, producing large-scale ecclesiastical commissions and refined figurative sculpture.
His work style is marked by an understated sense of form, clarity of line, and a measured dignity: “He developed through commissioned works and executed many figurative and architectural sculptures, repeatedly choosing relief and figure with a calm presence rather than flamboyant gesture.”
This standing girl exemplifies those qualities — poised, quietly assured, and expertly modelled in bronze with subtle patina. It is signed or monogrammed by the artist on the lower back of the sculpture, cast in very few editions, and comes ready for display in a gallery-style interior.
Werner Meurer — Sculptural Style Overview
Werner Meurer (1911–1986) worked within the tradition of 20th-century German figurative sculpture, bridging classical restraint and modern simplification. His style is characterized by clarity of form, calm composure, and structural balance rather than expressive movement.
He preferred compact, self-contained figures—often religious or humanist in theme—modeled with smooth, continuous volumes and an emphasis on proportion over detail. The surfaces of his bronzes retain a hand-worked tactility, revealing the modeling process without overt gesture.
Meurer’s figures, whether monumental cathedral commissions or small bronzes, share a sense of introspective stillness and timeless dignity. He avoided dramatic poses or narrative scenes, focusing instead on the essence of presence—figures reduced to balanced, enduring silhouettes.
His materials (mostly bronze, occasionally stone or plaster) reflect a traditional craft discipline inherited from his training at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and his later decades at the Cologne Cathedral workshop. Each bronze was typically produced in very limited casts, emphasizing individuality and artisanal execution.
