1920s Pier Sign, Venice California, Forty Feet Long, Original Rare

This is the original "LICK PIER BATH HOUSE" sign from the Venice California Lick Pier which burnt down in January 1924. Lick Pier was one of several piers in the Santa Monica Bay that lured thousands of people to the beach for the summers. The pier itself had a short four year lifespan as it caught fire on January 6th 1924 when flames spread from a fire on the nearby Pickering Pier (later named Pacific Ocean Park), a mere 100 ft to the north, damaging them both extensively. This Lick Pier Bath House sign is an original relic from the pier and a survivor of that catastrophic fire. This 1921 sign consists of four galvanized steel sheets with original hand sign writing. Each panel is 10 feet long and screwed onto 1" plywood using the original holes. The sign can be exhibited in a single line of 40 feet, or two lines of two panels giving a length of 20 feet (as photographed) or four panels of ten feet each placed on top of each other. The Lick Pier (built in 1921 by Charles Lick) measured 800 Feet Long and 200 feet wide, it boasted a 22,000 square-foot ballroom, a zip roller coaster, Dodge ‘em and Captive Airplane rides. Local historian and owner of famed Zephyr Surf Skateboards Skip Engbloom told us that it was the pylons from the destroyed Lick Pier that gave the infamous “DOGTOWN” Surf Break its wave. The finish and the patina are all original and have been professionally stabilized and sealed. This sign is the ultimate piece of Los Angeles and Venice history and is arguably the rarest most significant Venice California relic of its type for sale anywhere.
