About the Item

Original mid-century wildlife warning sign reading “Danger – Grizzly,” produced in porcelain enamel on steel and dating to the mid-20th century, most commonly used from the 1950s through the early 1960s. Signs of this type were installed in North American national and state park environments prior to the widespread adoption of pictogram-based wildlife warnings. The sign’s blunt, text-only language is a defining characteristic of this earlier period. Rather than using illustrations or generalized phrasing such as “Bear Area,” it names the animal explicitly—“Grizzly”—a direct approach that largely disappeared by the mid-1960s as park signage shifted toward standardized graphics and softened wording. The bold red oval DANGER header and high-contrast black and white typography exemplify mid-century safety and wayfinding design. The surface shows authentic wear from long-term outdoor exposure, including enamel loss, scratches, oxidation, and patina throughout. The reverse retains aged steel. Wear is cosmetic only and is considered desirable, contributing depth, character, and a strong sense of place. The sign remains structurally sound and has not been restored. A rare and visually compelling collectible example of early American park and wildlife infrastructure. Especially appealing to designers and collectors drawn to mid-century graphic language and vernacular signage.
