About the Item

Description: A striking carved wooden staff finial from the Ovimbundu people of Angola, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. This finely sculpted piece depicts an idealized female head, with an elongated neck, large almond-shaped eyes, scarification markings on the cheeks, and a beautifully detailed coiffure. The hair is further embellished with metal studs, adding rhythm and texture to the composition. Originally mounted atop a chief’s or elder’s ceremonial staff, this type of finial served as a symbol of rank, identity, and ancestral presence. The deeply burnished patina and signs of wear speak to authentic age and traditional use. Provenance: Acquired from Rob Vervoort Ex-collection of Pierre Dartevelle, Brussels — one of the most respected dealers and collectors of classic African art. Now presented on a custom-made display base. Dimensions: Total height (with base): 25 cm Material: Hardwood, metal studs Condition: Very good — minor wear consistent with age. A rare and elegant example of classic Angolan tribal art, with excellent provenance.
