19th or early 20th century copper snake currency sculpture Zaire Africa Ngelima culture, Zaire, hand-forged, copper rod in an anthropomorphic stylized form of a coiled snake. In Africa, currency evolved in a different way to conventional money. Instead of money, these objects had a fairly stabile value and were recognized and accepted in the area in which they were used.
