About the Item

The Shi peoples are agriculturalists living on the shores of Lake Kivu in D.R. Congo. Artistically they are best known for their distinctively carved cups and pitchers. This example features a smoothly formed lid which, like the neck and lugs of the vessel, is embellished with incisions. Suggestive qualities abound in this vessel. An immediate sense of anthropomorphism imbues the piece, communicating impressions of infants, or perhaps helmeted warriors.
