About the Item

This is a pair of vintage African spear currencies from the Mbole peoples, Democratic Republic of Congo which are nicely presented upon custom metal stands. These African currencies take their name from their spear-shaped tip design, though due to their large size and delicate adornment, were not used as weapons. Instead, these pieces were typically valued as bridal currency, by various tribal groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo, they would be driven into the ground of the bride-to-be's family home, an acknowledgement that the price for the intended proposal had been paid. While we don't advise staking these spear currencies into the yard of one you'd like to betroth, we do think they could find their way into your home as a thought-provoking decorative piece. Dimensions: 11 inches wide x 11 inches deep x 81.5 inches high Shorter currency: 80.25 inches high (includes stand).
