About the Item
African stool with caryatid from Cameroon, Bamoun or Bamileke, probably around 1920, carved wood and dark patina, oval seat decorated with geometric notches, support in the shape of a carved animal (fabulous creature inspired by the leopard).
Former Trudi Schneebeli collection.
Trudi Schneebeli studied in Paris and was then for a long time court painter to the Ethiopian ruler in Addis Ababa, where she lived with her father, who was also a painter. In 1937, she set off with Dr. Margrit Fusbahn-Billwiller (1907-2001) on an adventurous journey. In six months, they took a road trip across the Sahara. In 1947, she married in Accra. Their traces are then lost. Trudi Schneebeli is represented in the database of the Cultural Museum of St. Gallen (Switzerland) with 18 pieces, all African objects: donations from 1947 and purchases from 1948.
