About the Item
Tribal African Igbo Agbogo mwo mask
This African Igbo mask, known as a "young girl", is decorated with a tangle of thick braids and fulfils the most important traditional aesthetic criteria. The white colour of the mask refers to the spirits of the ancestors. These masks often accompany the deceased during funeral rites.
The Igbo live in the forests of south-east Nigeria. Each village has a high degree of autonomy and is
under the authority of the oldest tribal leader. The religion of the Igbo includes the
the god Chuku , the supreme creator, who is considered omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent, and the spirit of the earth Ala .
The object is very expressive - the slender, feminine face is painted with brown decoration, the lips and ears are accentuated with a terracotta colour.
The headdress is three-dimensional and shows a luxuriant, thick head of hair, which has been extended backwards to show it fully.
Locally encrusted matt patina, light red ochre stains.
Slight abrasions.

African Dogon Tribal Bronze Figure “Mother with Child" Burkina Faso, 1970s
Located in Salzburg, AT
Fantastique African Dogon tribal bronze figure “Mother with Child,” Burkina Faso, 1970s
The heavy figure shows a dynamic representation of a mother in motion
with her toddler in her arms.
The object is so appealing because it has been elongated and the legs, arms,
and headdress are exaggerated.
The ribbed headdress is central, and there are also large earrings and a
loincloth.
The casting is very detailed and finely crafted.
Due to its weight and size, we have mounted the object on an acrylic base.
