About the Item
Carved wood Akuaba, sometimes known as an Ashanti doll or a Fanti doll.
Untouched condition with a beautiful natural age-related patina.
Akua'ba (sometimes spelled Akwaba or Akuba) are wooden ritual fertility dolls from Southern Ghana and nearby areas.
from Ghana, 1930-1940.
Disk-headed akuaba figures remain one of the most recognizable forms in African art and were important fertility aids among Akan-speakers in Ghana in the past. They depict an abstracted female form in wood and were created by male carvers. When a woman wants to have a child, she will have an Akua Ba statuette made and placed on a specific altar. Some time later, she will take this figure again and take care of it like a newborn baby.
