About the Item
Antique Japanese Nabeshima Carpet (Dantsu)
Nabeshima dantsu (carpets) are some of the earliest examples of rug making in Japan. The original weavers learned their craft from Chinese rug weavers in Kyushu during the early Edo period (1603 ~ 1868). Their production in Saga Prefecture in Kyushu, southern Japan, flourished through the Edo, Meiji and Taisho periods and continued in smaller numbers through the 20th century. They were traditionally used in temples, tea houses and aristocratic households on tatami mat floors during the winter months, and unlike other Asian and central Asian carpets, they are made entirely of cotton instead of wool. This was due primarily to the hot humid summers in Japan, and the fact that local wool production has always been limited. This example displays a traditional Nabeshima pattern and dates from the early 1900s. Their construction is of long cotton pile, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation, tightly woven, and in this case with tassels at one end. This is a sturdy rug, yet relatively light weight. In very good condition with no restoration or repairs.
