Antique Japanese Stencil-Dyed Han-Juban With Fan Motif
Han-juban are short, waist length garments that are worn under kimono. It’s not uncommon for older examples to be missing their sleeves, as they were often replaced when worn or damaged. This han-juban is composed of tightly woven hand-spun cotton, with a summer design of fans and bellflowers on an intricate grid pattern achieved using a stencil-dyeing process called katazome, with indigo as the dye. The stencils themselves are composed of laminated mulberry paper with the patterns meticulously carved out in minute detail. With good indigo saturation, and a hand-spun cotton collar. In very good condition.
