About the Item
Antique Rare Ceremonial Shoulder Cloth (Kain Nyulam), South Sumatra
This fully embellished and intricately embroidered shoulder cloth (kain nyulam) is a rare and unique example of the important influence that Chinese embroidery had on various SE Asian ceremonial textiles. Used as a widow’s shoulder cloth, it is almost entirely covered with silk floss embroidery outlined in gold-wrapped thread with metal sequins. The layout of the textile is closely related to both the silk resist-dyed plangi textiles and the silk weft-ikat woven limar textiles that are used ceremonially throughout the Palembang region.
