Antique Tribal Woman’s Skirt Cloth, Central Highlands, Vietnam
This unusual wrap-around skirt cloth was made by either the Ede people or the Jarai people from the Central Highlands of Vietnam. It is composed of two panels of very tightly woven cotton stitched together in the middle. The central field is very dark blue (almost black), with two wide outer bands of bright red and indigo blue, both bordered with extremely fine warp patterned bands of geometric designs and undulating lines. Clearly evident in the design layout and intricate patterning of this textile is not only the skill of the weaver, but the masterful use of subtle coloration and the expertise of the dyer. With edge wrapping around the entire textile.
