About the Item

This is a very fine example of an ' Akua Ba ' doll from the Ashante people of Ghana . Akua ba means 'welcome child ' in the Twi language of the region. Carved from a very light weight wood and would be carved for a young girl in her early teens. The lovely dark patina has been created from years of handling and blessed with sacred herbs. The young girl would carry the doll with her at all times until she produces children of her own. The piece is adorned with personal beadwork.
