About the Item

This is a very rare Ashante Queen Mother's stool with exceptional Provenance . This stool would have been carved for a Queen Mother in the very early part of the 19th century. The stool exhibits a very rich patina created by regular use from the early 1800's . The stool was purchased by Sir John McNeil VC a highly decorated British Officer during the Ashante Wars in 1873. Sir John McNeil was badly injured during the Ashante War of 1873 . Went on to Campaigns in Sudan and New Zealand . In the late 1890's he was appointed as Equerry to Queen Victoria. The stool itself is a masterclass of Ashante carving with the central pillar of the stool representing longevity and stability during the reign of the Queen Mother. In keeping with Ashante Culture the stool would have been split to release the spirit of the owner from the stool and the stool would then have been ritually placed in the family Shrine The stool has been bolted together by one of Sir John McNeils Carpenters and is stable. An exceptional stool with exceptional Provenance.
