Baoulé Statue, wood, Circa 1950, Côte d'Ivoire, Afrique.
Height: 31 cm.
Very beautiful Baoulé statue from Ivory Coast, covered with a natural, earthy patina in places.
It contains remnants of gold dust and mika.
This traditional statue could have been carved around the 1950s.
Its delicacy, its attention to detail, and its very introverted seated figure are reminiscent of the style of the Master of Ascher's entourage. Sculptors never worked alone; the master's assistants and students may have been influenced and created statues of this type on their own.
