About the Item
This is a very fine Royal figure from the Baule people of Cote d'Ivoire ( Ivory Coast) . This fine sculpture would have been commissioned by the village to commemorate the life of a High ranking Chief. Carved from very dense wood and ritually blessed to fortify the Chiefs spirit and commemorate his life. The sculptural quality of the piece is exceptional depicting the classic serene nature of Baule carving . Collected in the 1960's by a French Physician working in Cote d'Ivoire. Baule figures are carved with great care and this piece is no exception. The figure is depicted seated as all Royal figures are carved . This piece is very decorative as well as collectable.
