About the Item
The form of this early twentieth-century Pokot stool from Kenya exhibits a beautiful sculptural quality, in which three curved, flared and flattened legs support the flat circular seat.
Small, three-legged stools such as this were carried and used by Pokot elders - serving a dualistic purpose as both functional objects and material symbols of the individual's rank and prestige.
An old restoration, in which a single copper rivet was used, is present on the rim of the seat. The surface of the stool exhibits a slightly glossy, smooth, light patina.
