About the Item
Traditional Isicholo Zulu Hat
South Africa, Mid-20th Century
A striking circular Isicholo hat, traditionally worn by married Zulu women as a symbol of respect, status, and identity. This vintage example features a broad, radiating from a central aperture that reveals a blackened hourglass motif—a subtle focal point emphasizing the precision of the handwork.
Originally inspired by elaborate coiffures of the 19th century, Isicholo hats were later constructed from woven grass, cotton, and human hair, often coated with ochre or earth pigments to achieve their deep tones. Mounted on a custom metal stand, this piece transcends its utilitarian and ceremonial origins to stand as a powerful sculptural object, embodying the cultural and aesthetic heritage of the Zulu people.
