A very rare bust of a Colonial Officer from the Makonde people of Mozambique. The carving of a Colonial Officer is of exceptional quality. Dating from the early 20th century and carved from a very dense hardwood . Classic Makonde carving and typical of its era. The piece would have been carved by a Master craftsman to commemorate this Officer who would have served with distiction. The wood used is extremely dense and the piece has been handled regularly and revered developing a glorious dark patina over decades of care and handling .
