About the Item

This striking Folk Art hand-carved Igorot tribal hunter and dog figure is a finely detailed sculptural work carved from a single solid piece of ebonized hardwood, including its integral base. The figure depicts a tribal hunter wearing a loincloth, weighted earrings, and a pendant necklace, with a chevron-patterned sack at his side and a large woven basket strapped to his head and resting against his back. In one arm he carries a substantial shield, while the other supports a long staff. Walking faithfully alongside him is a dog, his loyal companion, adding narrative depth and movement to the composition. The sculpture displays thoughtful hand-carved detailing throughout, evident in the facial features, textiles, accessories, and the expressive posture of both hunter and animal. The base is carved with a repeating triangular pattern on three sides, reinforcing the graphic quality of the piece. The staff is the only separately carved element; it presents a slightly rougher surface, suggesting either a different wood species or a later replacement, though it remains visually and stylistically consistent with the sculpture. The dense hardwood exhibits a rich, aged ebonized patina, with gentle wear to raised areas revealing warm reddish-brown undertones beneath, clear evidence of age and authentic surface history. At some point, a hole was drilled through the bottom of the basket, suggesting the figure may have been intended as a lamp base at some point, and it could easily be electrified again if desired. Additionally, the flat back of the shield and the absence of base decoration on that side indicate the piece may also have functioned as a decorative bookend. The Igorot peoples are a group of indigenous communities from the Cordillera mountain region of Northern Luzon in the Philippines, historically known for their self-sufficient highland culture, agricultural mastery, and deeply symbolic material traditions. Wood carving played an important role in Igorot visual culture, often serving ceremonial, spiritual, or status-related functions rather than purely decorative ones. Figures depicting hunters, warriors, or traveling men accompanied by dogs are commonly interpreted as representations of protection, survival, and masculine identity, as well as the vital relationship between humans and animals in daily life. Dogs were valued companions in hunting and village protection, symbolizing loyalty, vigilance, and partnership. The inclusion of a shield and staff further reinforces themes of defense, mobility, and preparedness, while the basket, an essential tool in Igorot life, suggests sustenance, trade, or agricultural labor. Such figures may have functioned as guardian objects, symbols of strength and provision, or commemorative representations of an individual’s role within the community. Over time, carvings like this were also produced for trade or export, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, yet they often retained authentic iconography and traditional carving methods. The deliberate posture, detailed adornment, and narrative composition of this sculpture point to a piece that conveys cultural meaning beyond ornamentation. Condition is very good for an early hand-carved wood sculpture. There is a fine age-related crack at the back of the basket, as well as a fine crack with minor loss at the back left side of the base. Such drying cracks are common in older carved wood objects and are considered a testament to the age, authenticity, and handmade nature of the piece. A compelling example of Igorot tribal art, folk sculpture, and hand-carved ethnographic woodwork, this figure is ideal for collectors of tribal art, Asian folk art, primitive sculpture, and early 20th-century decorative objects. Its strong presence, narrative subject matter, and beautiful patina make it a standout addition to any curated interior or collection.
